Software Review: BitDefender Antivirus 2010
by admin on Jul.20, 2010, under Thain's Software Reviews
BitDefender Antivirus 2010 provides advanced proactive protection against viruses, spyware, phishing attacks and identity theft, without slowing down your PC.
I have recently had the chance to check out BitDefender Antivirus 2010 and here is how it went:
Installation:
The installer I liked a lot. It gives you ample control over how it is installed. It also allows you to choose whether you want it installed in “Novice mode”, where everything is set automatically, “Intermediate mode” , where it will give you more options to choose from, or “Expert mode”, where you have total control over the options. This I like as I am one that likes to control the computer rather than have the program do it. Installation was smooth and event-less.
Operation:
After re-booting, as is required for most antivirus programs, BitDefender started a “Quick System Scan” of my computer. Since I have been around computers for quite some time, I have accumulated quite a collection of viruses that I used as “decoys” for BitDefender to find. The scan identified 100% of them correctly. This I was quite surprised about as most antivirus programs I have tried usually miss one or two. Of course, I do not have all viruses in the world, so my test consisted of 10.
Features:
BitDefender has quite a few good features. Here I will list just a few important ones:
- Real Time protection that scans on-the-fly
- Antiphishing protection for Firefox, IE, Yahoo Messenger, and Windows Live Messenger
- Privacy, Identity, Registry, Cookie & Script protection
- IM Encryption for Yahoo/Windows Messengers
- Game Mode (pauses scanning to release resources for games and computing intensive apps)
- Home Networking option to let you manage your network options
Conclusion:
BitDefender has proven to be a great asset to my computing arsenal. Since I do a lot of software testing, I need an accurate antivirus. I deemed BitDefender worthy to take that task for me for the next year. So if it will work for me, I think that it may benefit you too.
Dell Inspiron 530s Fan Noise
by admin on Jul.07, 2010, under Technical Corner
The procedure is quite easy even for the layman. Just open the computer (two screws in the back and slide off the side), and you’ll have your heat sink in sight. (the part with the fan on top) Remember to unplug the computer first. There will be 4 phillips screws on each corner of the heat sink. Unscrew all 4 screws and unplug the heat sink fan from the motherboard. Then lift off the heat sink and fan. The heat sink may be fairly stuck to the CPU, but don’t worry, it does come off with moderate force. If the heat sink does not come off with moderate force, then tighten the screws back, plug in the computer and turn it on for a while. This will heat the old compound and soften it a bit and it should come off easier. Set the heat sink aside. It might be a good idea to get rid of the old compound. Using a LINTLESS cloth with some highly pure isopropyl alcohol (70%+) will work. After cleaning the top of the CPU and bottom of the heat sink, apply a SMALL (about a millimeter wide) amount of heat sink compound to the top of the CPU from top to bottom so that it looks like a small line. There is no need to spread it. (the compound will spread when you tighten down the heat sink so don’t over do it) Then just assemble the heat sink in reverse of removal.
After re-assembling the computer, your 530s should be nice and quiet again.
